Greinke hits DL with left oblique strain

July 3rd, 2016

PHOENIX -- The disabled list keeps growing for the D-backs, who on Sunday placed ace right-hander Zack Greinke on the 15-day DL with a strained left oblique.
Greinke initially injured the oblique in his start last Tuesday against the Phillies and had to exit that game after throwing a few warmup pitches in the third inning. He had hoped to miss just one start -- Tuesday against the Padres -- before returning next weekend against the Giants in San Francisco.
An MRI taken Saturday confirmed the strain, and the team decided to err on the side of caution and put him on the DL.
"So with all the testing he did and him not feeling any better, he agreed that probably the best thing to do, course of action, is to go on the DL," D-backs manager Chip Hale said. "Hopefully he'll be ready for us after the break. That would be important, the sooner we get him back."

More than likely, it will be Zack Godley who will be called up from Triple-A Reno to start in Greinke's place Tuesday.
"It's getting better, but I'm not ready for game action, and more than likely wouldn't be in the 10 or 11 days before the All-Star break," Greinke said. "So we just did it now and hopefully we'll be back a little bit after that. I've gotten a lot better since five days ago, but I'm still not ready for game action. I haven't even played catch. I have to play catch and throw a bullpen before I can pitch in a game. It gets better every day but that doesn't mean it's all the way better."
Greinke joins outfielders David Peralta and Chris Owings along with right-hander Rubby De La Rosa as players the D-backs counted on to be key contributors this year that have spent time on the DL.
