Willie Mac Award will be given out in 2020

August 28th, 2020

Willie McCovey always shall be remembered. So will the award that exists in his honor.

Despite the truncated 60-game season, the Willie Mac Award still will be given to the Giants player who most exemplifies McCovey’s determination and class. Staci Slaughter, the Giants’ vice president of communications, confirmed the award’s perpetuation on Wednesday.

The date for the announcement of the award has not been finalized, though it surely will fall during the Sept. 25-27 home series against San Diego that will conclude the regular season. The winner is selected in a vote consisting mostly of players, coaches, the athletic training staff and manager Gabe Kapler. Fan balloting accounts for a small percentage of voting results. McCovey also received a ballot until his death in 2018.

McCovey’s legend lives on at Oracle Park through the presence of McCovey Cove, the portion of San Francisco Bay that attracts numerous boats and kayakers beyond the right-field stands, and the statue capturing the Hall of Fame first baseman’s powerful swing that stands beyond the cove.

Right fielder Jack Clark was the inaugural winner of the Willie Mac Award in 1980.
