DENVER – Giants outfielder Harrison Bader left Friday’s 8-6 loss to the Rockies after aggravating his left plantar fasciitis on a defensive play in the eighth inning. On Saturday, Bader landed on the 10-day injured list.
“It's tough to pinpoint when it started, but it did start before last night,” manager Tony Vitello said Saturday. “And then [in the eighth inning Friday], there was a ball in front of him and coming in on that, he aggravated it. He'll do whatever he's got to do to make sure that thing heals quickly.”
Vitello was not aware if Bader had experienced plantar fasciitis in the past.
Bader was hitting .170 with five doubles, five homers and 14 RBIs through Friday, when he went 1-for-4 with an RBI single and two strikeouts.
In a corresponding move, the Giants recalled outfielder Will Brennan from Triple-A Sacramento. It is Brennan’s third stint with the Giants this season. He was most recently optioned to Triple-A after Wednesday’s game to make room for Jung Hoo Lee’s return on Friday.
Brennan entered Saturday’s game hitting .087 in 11 Major League games this season, and he had a .337/.370/.446 slash line for Sacramento. Vitello said he plans to use Brennan primarily off the bench as a left-handed pinch-hitter, a luxury the Giants haven’t always had this season.
“It's been kind of painful, because he's such a good kid,” Vitello said. “If you're just going to go off batting averages, he outhit a talented group in Sacramento, and he's got experience, so it's not like, ‘Hey, cut the guy some slack.’ But it just hasn't clicked for him. It's been unfortunate because the numbers don't really show what he's capable of doing. He's a good contact hitter.”
