CHICAGO -- One day after absorbing a heartbreaking extra-inning loss at Wrigley Field, the Giants managed to flip the script on the Cubs.
Matt Chapman delivered a go-ahead single in the top of the 10th inning to lift the Giants to a 2-1 win in Sunday night’s series finale on the North Side, securing a 5-5 road trip for San Francisco.
The Giants appeared to be in danger of getting walked off for the second straight day, as the Cubs put runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the ninth against Keaton Winn, who surrendered a game-tying home run to Pete Crow-Armstrong on Saturday that set up Chicago’s 3-2 walk-off win in 10 innings.
But Winn didn’t buckle this time, coaxing a groundout from Crow-Armstrong to preserve a 1-1 tie and send the game into extras.
The Giants subsequently went ahead in the top of the 10th, when Chapman stroked a single to right field that scored pinch-runner Jonah Cox -- the automatic runner -- from second base.
Right-hander Dylan Smith took over in the bottom of the 10th and struck out Michael Conforto and coaxed popouts from Michael Busch and Alex Bregman to earn his first career save.
The Giants jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning thanks to the red-hot Jung Hoo Lee, who lined a two-out RBI single off Cubs starter Jameson Taillon to extend his hitting streak to a career-high 15 games. Lee is batting .483 (28-for-58) over that span, which is the longest active streak in the Majors.
Taillon returned to the mound in the top of the second, but he ended up exiting the game with a left hamstring strain after issuing a leadoff walk to Chapman. Left-hander Javier Assad came in to replace Taillon, though he fell into a jam after hitting Daniel Susac to put runners on first and second with no outs.
Drew Gilbert laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners, but Chapman was thrown out at the plate when he attempted to score from third on Casey Schmitt’s bouncer to the right side. The Cubs had their infield drawn in on the play, allowing second baseman Pedro Ramírez to snag Schmitt’s 101.6 mph grounder and quickly throw to catcher Carson Kelly, who managed to tag out a sliding Chapman before he could touch home.
San Francisco challenged the call, but the ruling was upheld following a replay review, preventing the club from extending its lead. The Giants went on to record only one hit against Assad, who threw 6 1/3 scoreless innings after being pressed into duty.
Rookie Trevor McDonald opened his start by retiring the first eight batters he faced, but he allowed the Cubs to tie the game behind three consecutive singles from Kelly, Crow-Armstrong and Moisés Ballesteros in the bottom of the third.
Chicago also loaded the bases in the fourth after Ian Happ tripled and Nico Hoerner and Ramírez drew back-to-back walks with two outs, but McDonald struck out Kelly swinging on a slider to maintain the deadlock.
McDonald departed after giving up one run on four hits while walking three and striking out six over five innings.
