In January 2019, the Mariners hosted the second annual On BASE Youth Clinic for local baseball and softball players from Seattle Central Little League, Rainier District Little League, and the Rainier Vista Boys & Girls Club.
Veteran Mariner Marco Gonzales joined new members of the Mariners, Justus Sheffield, J.P. Crawford, and Mallex Smith at the clinic where they helped young sluggers pitch, hit, run, and field like they do in the big leagues. Each participant enjoyed one-on-one instruction from the Mariners players in the cages, on the mound, and on the baseline. In addition, the athletes had the opportunity to listen in on Q&A with Mariners players who spoke about their playing careers in Little League and their journey to Major League Baseball.
Each participant received autographs from the Mariners players, and Mariners goodie bags from Mariner Moose. The purpose of On BASE Youth Clinics is to help young athletes build confidence and encourage them to continue playing the games of baseball and softball, regardless of their skill level.
The Mariners will host the second On BASE Youth Clinic of 2019 on April 20th with Metro Parks Tacoma Elementary Sports baseball and softball participants.
In 2018, the Mariners hosted the inaugural On BASE Youth Clinic for local youth baseball and softball players and children who had never had the opportunity to play these games before. Mariners such as Dee Gordon, Mitch Haniger, Mike Zunino, and Ryon Healy all helped young King County sluggers learn how to pitch, hit, and run like the pros.
