Nationals' annual Turkeypalooza gives D.C.-area residents reason to be thankful

November 22nd, 2022

WASHINGTON -- Nationals Philanthropies continued its annual holiday tradition this week with its fifth -- and biggest -- Turkeypalooza yet.

The expanded three-day event, taking place in partnership with BetMGM, provides 800 turkeys to families of the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy and residents in need from four nearby areas. In addition to the turkeys, bags of fresh produce and shelf-stable items will be distributed for more than 3,200 complete meals.

Turkeypalooza began on Monday afternoon at Nationals Park; within 30 minutes, 200 turkeys and bags of food were shared.

“Nationals Philanthropies is dedicated to helping all residents of the Greater Washington, D.C., region have the opportunity to thrive,” said Tal Alter, CEO of Nationals Philanthropies. “Food insecurity is chief among the concerns of communities affected by poverty, particularly in a season that emphasizes food and family. Thanks in large part to the significant contributions of our partners at BetMGM, we are able to bring Thanksgiving meals directly to more residents, meeting them where they are throughout the region.”

Drive-through and walk-up Turkeypalooza distributions will be held for the public from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. ET at the KIPP DC Legacy College Preparatory (near Scherzer Field) in Washington on Tuesday and the Oakcrest Community Center in District Heights, Md., on Wednesday. An additional event will be held for Nationals Youth Baseball Academy scholar athletes’ families.

“Investing in the communities where our employees and customers live and work is a priority to the entire MGM family,” said Adam Greenblatt, CEO of BetMGM. “Nationals Philanthropies has a long track record of positive impact in the Greater Washington community, including efforts related to food insecurity, making a partnership an obvious choice. The team at BetMGM, the official sportsbook of the Washington Nationals, is proud to help the foundation expand its efforts this year and open Turkeypalooza to the public for the first time.”

Turkeypalooza is a continuation of the Nationals Philanthropies’ year-round food-distribution efforts.
