Notes: First round of cuts; Lester throws BP

March 14th, 2021

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- The Nationals made their first round of roster moves on Sunday with two weeks remaining in Spring Training.

Right-hander Joan Adon (the Nats’ No. 16 prospect, per MLB Pipeline) as well as infielders Yasel Antuna (No. 4) and Jake Noll were optioned to Triple-A Rochester.

Right-handers Cade Cavalli (No. 1), Jackson Rutledge (No. 2), Cole Henry (No. 3), Tyler Dyson (No. 23), Bryan Bonnell, Jacob Condra-Bogan, Tyler Eppler, Gabe Klobosits and Jefry Rodriguez, left-handers Tim Cate (No. 8) and Matt Cronin (No. 10), infielders Drew Mendoza (No. 11) and Jackson Cluff (No. 17), outfielder Cody Wilson and catchers Israel Pineda (No. 15), Jakson Reetz (No. 26) and Raudy Read were reassigned to the Minor League portion of the Nationals’ MLB camp.

Expect to still see some of these players, though. Manager Dave Martinez explained that with the changes to protocols this year, those listed above were shifted into different workout groups from the rest of the team.

“The only thing that changes really is that they'll start a little later than we do,” Martinez said before the Nationals’ game against the Astros. “But we're able to keep eyes on them, and you'll see a lot of guys still playing in our games late.”

Lester throws live BP
threw 37 pitches in a live batting practice on Sunday, nine days after undergoing a parathyroidectomy (a removal of a parathyroid gland) in New York to alleviate hyperparathyroidism. He returned to camp on Monday and had been working on his strength and flexibility since then. There is no date set for the 37-year-old southpaw to make his first appearance with the Nats.

“He looked good,” Martinez said. “He was about 75 to 80 percent, but the ball was coming out well. … He mentioned about getting in a game. We'll see how he feels tomorrow."

Rainey progressing
, who experienced soreness in his collarbone area, also threw a live BP on Sunday morning. The righty reliever tossed 20 pitches at 80 percent as he works toward his Spring Training debut. According to Martinez, Rainey said he “had a lot more in the tank” after the session and felt pain-free.

"What I'd like to do with him is give him another two days in between,” Martinez outlined. “Get him back on another live and let him amp up a little bit -- as if he was coming in a game like he normally does -- and get him up to about 90, 95 percent. After that, hopefully everything comes out well and we can start plopping him in the game.”

Barrett has knee surgery
Veteran right-hander underwent right knee surgery, and he was scheduled to return to Florida this weekend. Barrett, 33, has overcome a series of injuries throughout his career, including Tommy John surgery followed by a broken humerus bone.

"He was here early and he was throwing, and he felt something in his knee,” Martinez said. “[He] went and got an MRI, and he had to get it cleaned up."
