The Washington Nationals selected the contract of infielder Trey Lipscomb and placed third baseman Nick Senzel on the 10-day Injured List (retroactive to March 27) with a fractured right thumb on Saturday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

Lipscomb, 23, is coming off a Spring Training in which he led Major League Baseball in batting average (.400) and ranked in the top 10 in on-base percentage (3^rd, .455), hits (T5^th, 20) and OPS (9^th, .995). He was assigned to Triple-A Rochester on March 28, but had his contract selected before the season began. Lipscomb enters the season rated as Washington’s No. 16 prospect by Baseball America and MLBPipeline.com.

Lipscomb was Washington’s 2023 Minor League Defensive Player of the Year and the winner of the Rawlings Minor League Gold Glove Award for third basemen. In his first full professional season in 2023, he led Nationals Minor Leaguers with 139 hits and 29 doubles while ranking fourth in average (.272), and RBI (72) and tied for fourth in home runs (14). Lipscomb opened the year with High-A Wilmington before being promoted to Double-A Harrisburg on June 9. From that point, through the end of the season, he led the Eastern League in hits (91) and ranked second on the Senators in home runs (10).

A native of Frederick, Maryland and graduate of Urbana High School, Lipscomb was selected in the third round of the 2022 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Tennessee. As a senior in 2022, he led the Southeastern Conference and ranked fifth in the nation with 80 RBI.
