PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies’ managerial search is wrapping up.

Dusty Baker had a second round of interviews Thursday at Citizens Bank Park, according to sources. Buck Showalter will interview for a second time Friday, and Joe Girardi will interview for a second time Monday. There are no other known candidates, and unless one emerges, it is not a stretch to think that an announcement could come before the month is over.

The interview process is the same one Phillies general manager Matt Klentak and assistant general manager Ned Rice used two years ago when they hired Gabe Kapler to replace Pete Mackanin. Klentak, Rice, assistant general manager Bryan Minniti and former player development director Joe Jordan interviewed first-round candidates away from the ballpark, then brought three finalists to meet other members of the Phillies’ front office.

Front-office officials then provided opinions of each candidate. Most preferred Kapler over Dusty Wathan and John Farrell. It is unclear how much weight those opinions carried then or will carry now. Phillies managing partner and principal owner John Middleton is meeting with each candidate this week. His opinion matters most, of course. He dismissed Kapler last week.

Baker had his first-round interview Wednesday. Showalter and Girardi interviewed earlier this week.

If the Phillies make no changes to their schedule and interview no further candidates, they could have an announcement Oct. 24. Games 1 and 2 of the World Series are Tuesday and Wednesday, preventing an announcement then. The next day is a travel day before Game 3 of the World Series in Washington, which is why an announcement might come then.
