NEW YORK -- Outfielder Cameron Maybin, who has been out since June 23 with a strained left calf, hit live pitching outside Friday at Yankee Stadium as he continues to progress towards a return.

“[He] looked really good,” manager Aaron Boone said before Friday’s game. “I’ll see how he came out of all this today, assuming ... well.”

Maybin was hitting .314 in 42 games for the Yankees this season before the injury. They acquired him from the Indians in late April.

Pitcher Ben Heller, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, was removed from his rehab assignment with an injury earlier this week. The right-hander had a flexor strain, according to Boone, and was shut down from throwing for a week.

“Hopefully that’s all it is, and then he can get back and going again. He’s a couple of days into the no-throwing now, so that should probably be another handful of days,” Boone said.

Heller underwent Tommy John surgery in April 2018 and missed the entire season. He last pitched in the Majors in '17, when he allowed one run in 11 innings across multiple stints in June, July and September.
