MESA, Ariz. -- A day after announcing Trevor Cahill's one-year Major League deal, the A's reeled in yet another former rotation member, coming to terms with Brett Anderson on a Minor League contract Tuesday.
Anderson and Cahill were rotation mates in Oakland from 2009-11, and a second partnership could transpire should Anderson work his way onto the big league roster.

Cahill and Anderson were brought in as starting depth for a club that entered spring with very little -- an issue exacerbated by news that right-hander Jharel Cotton will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the season.
Anderson, 30, made his big league debut with the A's in 2009, and he compiled a 26-29 record and 3.81 ERA in 84 games (73 starts) across five seasons with the team. Injuries shortened many of them, an ongoing trend in his career.

Anderson made 13 starts between the Cubs and Blue Jays last year, posting a 6.34 ERA in 55 1/3 innings. Just three times in his nine-year career has he crossed the 100-inning threshold, most recently in 2015 when he went 10-9 with a 3.69 ERA in 31 starts over 180 1/3 innings for the Dodgers.
Injury updates
Melvin confirmed reliever Ryan Dull (shoulder) and corner infielder/outfielder Renato Nunez (hamstring) will begin the season on the disabled list. The A's will subsequently have extra time to make a roster decision on Nunez, who is out of options.
Left fielder Khris Davis was a late scratch from Tuesday's lineup due to illness, but he is expected back in the lineup Wednesday against his former Brewers team.

Camp battles
Right-hander Paul Blackburn was knocked around for seven runs in just 3 1/3 innings against the Dodgers on Tuesday. The rotation candidate felt fine physically but was bothered by trying to correct one too many mechanical issues at once.
"I've been working on a lot of stuff this spring, and today nothing was there," Blackburn said, "so I went through about four or five different things to fix, and that's not the right place to do it.
"That's a good lineup, but I didn't help myself at all."
Despite the hiccup, Blackburn remains squarely in the rotation mix. He had a 3.86 ERA in his first five Catcus League outings, with just two earned runs allowed in his previous 10 innings entering Tuesday.
