Chapman day to day with left ankle soreness

July 18th, 2019

OAKLAND -- was pulled from Wednesday’s 10-2 win over the Mariners at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum just before the start of the third inning with what the A’s announced as left ankle soreness.

The All-Star third baseman appeared to be experiencing discomfort during his at-bat in the first inning after fouling off consecutive pitches from Mariners opener Erik Swanson. Chapman finished the at-bat by popping out to first base and even played the field in the second before leaving the game. Chad Pinder replaced Chapman at third, and Robbie Grossman entered the game to take Pinder’s original spot in left field.

“It bothered him a little bit, and we just didn’t want to mess around with it,” A’s manager Bob Melvin said. “Try to nip it at the pass. He’s day to day, and we’ll see how he is tomorrow.”

In the midst of a five-RBI performance in Tuesday’s 9-2 win over Seattle, Chapman tripped over left fielder Pinder while making a catch in shallow left for the first out of the second inning. Though Chapman’s left ankle took the brunt of the impact on that play, Wednesday’s departure had more to due with an ongoing issue that dates back before that play.

“It’s kind of been on and off a little bit,” Melvin said. “Today it just got to the point where we didn’t want to run him out there for the whole game.”

Injuries are never ideal, but losing Chapman for an extended period of time would be especially crushing for Oakland. Not only has the 2018 Gold and Platinum Glove Award winner continued to provide his usual spectacular run-saving plays on defense, but he has also emerged as one of the top young hitters in baseball, batting .279 with 22 home runs and 59 RBIs and leading the A’s in all three categories.

“He tends to be able to play through things,” Melvin said. “We’ll just see how he is tomorrow.”
