OAKLAND -- The defensive highlight reel being compiled by Ramón Laureano is about as good as it gets for any player barely going through his first full big league season. He provided another gem for that collection on Wednesday in a 10-2 win over the Mariners.

With the A’s already leading 7-2, Laureano stopped a potential momentum boost for Seattle when he leaped and crashed into the center-field wall to take away a two-run home run from Tim Beckham. Instead of the Mariners cutting the lead to three runs, Beckham was left shaking his head in disbelief as the catch ended the top of the eighth to keep the deficit at five.

“If he doesn’t catch that, all of a sudden it’s a save situation,” A’s manager Bob Melvin said. “When the ball was hit, I was just hoping it wouldn’t go out. I didn’t think he would be the one that stopped it from going out from where he was, but he ran a great route in the tough sun. We’ve seen him do it before, but you try not to get spoiled. It was a great play.”

It was a span of three minutes that was about as good as it gets for Laureano, who immediately led off the bottom half of the eighth with a solo blast off Mariners reliever Matt Festa, increasing his career-high home run total at any level to 19.

It has been a rapid rise for the A’s center fielder, who since getting traded from the Astros in the 2018 offseason has evolved from a prospect considered to be lower level to someone getting it done on both sides of the field. His 19 homers are second only to the Angels' Mike Trout among Major League center fielders.

“He’s had a great year all the way around and really playing in the fashion he expects to play,” Melvin said. “For a guy that hasn’t been in the big leagues that long, he’s putting up significant numbers, both offensively and defensively.”
