OAKLAND -- Right-hander Trevor Cahill is likely headed for a stint on the disabled list, A's manager Bob Melvin said on Tuesday.
Cahill was scratched from Saturday's scheduled start against the Royals with a right Achilles injury, and he is "not great," according to Melvin. He added that Cahill has not responded in the fashion that the A's had hoped.
"I think recently maybe walking around, he hasn't felt great," Melvin said. "Whether or not it enhanced the state that he's in right now, not sure yet. I think we're at the point where we're going to have to make a decision and DL him."
Cahill has pitched well in his return to the A's this season, compiling a 1-2 record with a 2.77 ERA in eight starts.
If he goes on the DL, the A's will likely recall Chris Bassitt from Triple-A Nashville to take Cahill's spot in the rotation. Bassitt started in place of Cahill on Saturday and did well in the spot start, allowing one run and striking out six over seven innings. He was optioned back to Triple-A following the start, his first Major League appearance since 2016.
"He deserves another chance, based on how he pitched the last time out," Melvin said.
Injury updates
• Right-hander Andrew Triggs, who has been on the DL with right arm nerve irritation since May 18, will throw an extended bullpen session on Wednesday and is nearing a Minor League rehab assignment.
• Brett Anderson will also throw a bullpen session on Wednesday, according to Melvin. It will be the first time the lefty will throw off a mound since straining his left shoulder on May 18 in a start against the Blue Jays.
• Left-hander Ryan Buchter, who has a strained left shoulder, threw 16 pitches for Class A Advanced Stockton on Monday, and will throw 20 more in a relief appearance on Thursday.
• Outfielder Boog Powell also played in Stockton on Monday. He started his rehab assignment on Saturday after suffering a sprained right knee in early April.
