Cahill likely heading for disabled list

A's righty was scratched on Saturday with Achilles injury

OAKLAND -- Right-hander is likely headed for a stint on the disabled list, A's manager Bob Melvin said on Tuesday.
Cahill was scratched from Saturday's scheduled start against the Royals with a right Achilles injury, and he is "not great," according to Melvin. He added that Cahill has not responded in the fashion that the A's had hoped.
"I think recently maybe walking around, he hasn't felt great," Melvin said. "Whether or not it enhanced the state that he's in right now, not sure yet. I think we're at the point where we're going to have to make a decision and DL him."
Cahill has pitched well in his return to the A's this season, compiling a 1-2 record with a 2.77 ERA in eight starts.
If he goes on the DL, the A's will likely recall from Triple-A Nashville to take Cahill's spot in the rotation. Bassitt started in place of Cahill on Saturday and did well in the spot start, allowing one run and striking out six over seven innings. He was optioned back to Triple-A following the start, his first Major League appearance since 2016.
"He deserves another chance, based on how he pitched the last time out," Melvin said.
