OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland Athletics designated infielder Sheldon Neuse for assignment, the club announced today.  The move clears a roster spot for infielder Ernie Clement, who was claimed off waivers from the Cleveland Guardians yesterday.

Neuse batted .214 with four home runs, 26 RBI and a .561 OPS in 89 games over three stints with the A’s.  He was on the Opening Day roster and hit .228 in 49 games before he was optioned to Las Vegas June 7.  Neuse also had a 21-game stay with Oakland from June 21-July 28 and went 5-for-38 (.132) in 19 games during his last stint, which began on Aug. 17.

Clement was on the Opening Day roster with Cleveland and batted .200 with three doubles, six RBI and a .485 OPS in 64 games over two stints with the Guardians.  He started 17 games at third base, 10 at second base, eight in left field, one at first base and also pitched twice.  The 26-year-old right-handed hitter also batted .238 with four home runs, 17 RBI and a .729 OPS in 21 games with the Clippers.  Clement was originally selected by Cleveland in the fourth round of the 2017 draft and hit .231 with three home runs and nine RBI in 40 games last year in his Major League debut.  He has a .214 career average in 104 games in two seasons in the majors.
