Left-hander Alex Wood, who underwent an ablation procedure to alleviate stiffness in his lower back on March 16, tossed three scoreless innings in a scrimmage against the A’s at the Giants’ alternate training site on Wednesday.

Giants manager Gabe Kapler said Wood will continue to build up his volume and likely log at least one more rehab start before the club will have to decide whether to activate him from the 10-day injured list.

The starting rotation -- which is composed of right-handers Kevin Gausman, Johnny Cueto, Logan Webb, Anthony DeSclafani and Aaron Sanchez -- has been a strength of the club early this year, so the Giants could potentially adopt a six-man rotation once Wood returns, or use him in a piggyback-type role to try to ease him back into action.

Milestone for Peralta
Left-handed reliever Wandy Peralta collected his first career save in the Giants’ 3-2 win over the Padres on Wednesday, posting a 1-2-3 10th inning to strand the automatic runner and secure a series victory for San Francisco.

“I was really satisfied because I hadn’t been given the opportunity to close out a game before,” Peralta said in Spanish. “Fortunately, I got the chance to do it. I was a little nervous, but I was able to handle it well. I enjoyed it a lot.”

Peralta, 29, wasn’t used in many high-leverage situations in 2020, but he’s tossed three scoreless innings in his first three outings of the regular season and could have a chance to establish himself as a late-inning option behind closer Jake McGee and setup man Tyler Rogers.

“I like the competition, the adrenaline you feel in those moments,” Peralta said. “It’s something that’s hard to explain, but I enjoy it a lot. You work hard every day for those opportunities, and once you get the chance to pitch in those spots, you have to take advantage of it.”

Longoria not in starting lineup
Evan Longoria was held out of the Giants’ starting lineup in a 3-1 win over the Rockies on Friday afternoon after experiencing side effects from the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, Kapler said.

Wilmer Flores started at third base in place of Longoria, who was available off the bench but did not play.

Longoria, 35, has been one of the Giants’ hottest hitters over the first week of the regular season, batting .318 (7-for-22) with a team-high three home runs over six games.

Kapler said the majority of the Giants’ traveling party has received at least one shot, whether it be the front end of the two-dose Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, or the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Clubs were informed just before Opening Day that MLB and the MLBPA have agreed to relax certain health and safety protocols contained in the 2021 Operations Manual for fully vaccinated Tier 1 Individuals and for clubs where 85% of their Tier 1 Individuals are fully vaccinated. As part of that memo, players and staff were again strongly encouraged to receive one of the approved COVID-19 vaccines when eligible.
