Solano sent down, leaving Giants shorthanded

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants are operating with a short bench after optioning infielder to Triple-A Sacramento to clear a roster spot for left-hander Andrew Suarez, who started against the Braves in Monday night's series opener at Oracle Park.

Suarez's arrival gives the Giants 14 pitchers and 11 position players, which left backup catcher Stephen Vogt, third baseman Evan Longoria and outfielder Tyler Austin as the only three options off the bench against the Braves on Monday.

Manager Bruce Bochy said the arrangement will be temporary, as the Giants will likely call up another infielder Tuesday. Abiatal Avelino, the Giants' No. 17 prospect who is batting .269 with a .730 OPS over 37 games with Triple-A Sacramento, could be a candidate for that spot.

Bochy said Longoria will serve as the backup shortstop for now. Longoria has only one career appearance at shortstop in the Majors, which came in his rookie season with the Rays in 2008.

"Knock on wood that doesn't happen," Bochy said. "But I told Evan a couple hours ago, 'If something did happen [to Brandon Crawford], you would play short.' Joe [Panik] can go over there, too. And of course, Pablo [Sandoval] could."

Solano, 31, made six appearances in his brief stint with the Giants, going 2-for-9 with an RBI.

"I told him, 'This isn't because of performance,'" Bochy said. "It had nothing to do with it. We just needed a spot for Suarez. He did a nice job when he was up here."

Giants, Rays complete trade

The Giants announced Monday that they've acquired right-hander Matt Seelinger from the Rays as the player to be named in the Erik Kratz trade last week. A 28th-round Draft pick of the Pirates in 2017, Seelinger has a 3.21 ERA over 62 career relief appearances in the Minors. The 24-year-old will report to Class A Augusta.

Hjelle, Wong promoted

Right-handers Sean Hjelle and Jake Wong, two of the Giants' brightest pitching prospects, were elevated from Class A Augusta to Class A Advanced San Jose on Monday. Hjelle, the Giants' second-round Draft pick last year, posted a 2.66 ERA over 40 2/3 innings in nine starts for Augusta this year. Wong, a third-round pick in '18, logged a 1.99 ERA over 40 2/3 innings in eight starts.
