SAN FRANCISCO, CA - The San Francisco Giants have announced today that they have acquired five-time National League All-Star and former NL MVP Andrew McCutchen along with cash considerations from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for right-handed pitcher Kyle Crick, minor league outfielder Bryan Reynolds and international signing bonus pool money.
"It's no secret that we were looking to further add run production to our lineup", said Giants Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations Brian Sabean. "Anytime you have the opportunity to bring aboard someone with such a track record, you have to jump on it."
"Andrew is a remarkable talent and will be a difference maker in our lineup," said Giants Senior Vice President and General Manager Bobby Evans. "We're honored to have him and look forward to seeing him in a Giants uniform."
"Andrew is a dynamic player on the field and will be a leader in our clubhouse," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. He's always been a threat at the plate and he's a guy you don't ever want to deal with whether he's at the plate or on the bases; he's going to make something happen."
McCutchen, who had been a franchise cornerstone for the Pirates in recent years, is coming off a season in which he hit 28 home runs, the second-highest total of his career and just three shy of his career high (31 home runs in 2012). The 31-year-old batted .279 with 94 runs scored, 30 doubles and 88 RBI while posting a team-high .849 OPS in 156 games for Pittsburgh last season. His .336 batting average against left-handed pitchers was the eighth-best in the National League.
The former 2013 National League MVP is a five-time All-Star (2011-15), four-time Sliver Slugger award winner (2012-15), 2012 NL Gold Glove winner and a winner of the Roberto Clemente Award in 2015. He has topped the 20-homer mark in each of the last seven years and has driven in at least 79 runs in each of his past seven seasons. He has played in at least 146 games in eight-straight years and has topped 18-or-more stolen bases in six of his nine big league campaigns.
Drafted by the Pirates in the first round (11th overall) of the 2005 MLB June draft, McCutchen put together an excellent career in Pittsburgh, compiling a .291 batting average with 292 doubles, 44 triples, 203 home runs and 725 RBI in 1,346 games during his nine-year career (2009-17). McCutchen is one of just four Pirates with 200-or-more career home runs, joining Willie Stargell, Ralph Kiner and Roberto Clemente.
McCutchen has been to the postseason three times with the Pirates (2013-15), however has never made it past the divisional round. He's a career .321 hitter (9-for-28) in eight career postseason contests.
Crick, 25, made his big league debut with the Giants last season, appearing in 30 games and posting a 3.06 ERA with 28 strikeouts. A former first round pick in the 2011 draft, the Texas native has spent seven professional seasons with San Francisco, compiling a minor league record of 25-31 with a 3.37 ERA in 150 games (92 starts).
Reynolds, who will turn 24 years old on January 27, has spent the past two seasons in San Francisco's minor league chain, batting .312 with 16 home runs and 101 RBI in 177 games. Drafted by the Giants in the second round of the 2016 draft, the Vanderbilt product spent all of last season with Class A Advanced San Jose hitting .312 with 72 runs scored, 26 doubles, nine triples, 10 homers and 63 RBI in 121 contests.
