This Friday, the A’s will host the Giants in Spring Breakout, a first-of-its-kind exhibition featuring the top prospects in each farm system. Here’s everything to know about that game and this exciting new event.

What is Spring Breakout?
MLB Spring Breakout is a four-day event showcasing baseball’s future: the current stars of Minor League Baseball. The inaugural edition will be held from March 14-17 at Grapefruit and Cactus League stadiums during Spring Training. A series of 16 exhibition games will be played between teams comprised of each MLB organization’s top prospects, creating a new touchpoint on the baseball calendar that celebrates our sport’s budding talent.

What time is the Giants-A’s game?
The Spring Breakout game will be Game 2 of a doubleheader, with Game 1 being a standard Spring Training game that starts at 1:05 p.m. PT. The estimated start time for the Spring Breakout game is 4:05.

Which position player prospects are expected to play?

Giants
The Giants’ lineup will be headlined by a young trio that joined the organization last year: first baseman Bryce Eldridge (San Francisco’s No. 4 prospect), shortstop Walker Martin (No. 5) and outfielder Rayner Arias (No. 6). Eldridge, 19, and Martin, 20, were the Giants’ top two picks in the 2023 MLB Draft, while the 17-year-old Arias was the club’s top international signing after landing a $2,697,500 bonus last year. Outfielder Hunter Bishop, the Giants’ 2019 first-round Draft pick, is also expected to participate after sitting out the entire 2023 campaign due to Tommy John surgery.

There is a good chance Jacob Wilson, the A’s No. 1 prospect and No. 68 prospect in baseball per MLB Pipeline, will be manning the same infield as Thousand Oaks High School (Calif.) teammate Max Muncy, Oakland’s No. 8 prospect and its 2021 first-round Draft pick. Other players likely to be in the starting lineup include catcher Daniel Susac (No. 6) and outfielders Henry Bolte (No. 12) and Colby Thomas (No. 14).

Which pitching prospects are expected to play?

Giants
Hayden Birdsong (No. 7), Joe Whitman (No. 11), Trevor McDonald (No. 14) and Carson Seymour (No. 19) will be among the young hurlers on San Francisco’s roster, highlighting the groundswell of pitching that’s coming up through the Giants' organization. Birdsong, McDonald and Seymour are in big league camp for the first time this year, so they have the potential to develop into rotation options for the Giants sooner rather than later.

A's
Steven Echavarria (No. 7) and Cole Miller (No. 16), both of whom were 2023 MLB Draft selections, are among the pitchers on the roster. Royber Salinas (No. 17), Gunnar Hoglund (No. 20), Brady Basso (No. 23) and Ryan Cusick (No. 24) could also see action. Salinas and Basso are both in big league camp and have a good shot to reach the Majors at some point this season.

If you don’t see a top prospect on your favorite team’s roster, it is likely because they fall into one of two categories. They are either still in big league camp and battling for a roster spot, or the player is injured or has an injury concern.
