PHILADELPHIA -- In a conference call with reporters Wednesday, president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi was asked if he still felt good about the Giants’ chances of contending for a playoff berth even after making a series of moves that included subtracting three key relievers from his roster ahead of the Trade Deadline.

“I do,” Zaidi said. “I feel really confident we can keep things going.”

The Giants backed up that statement, going on to defeat the Phillies 5-1 at Citizens Bank Park in the aftermath of a hectic Trade Deadline for the club. They finished July with an MLB-best 19-6 record, allowing them to pull within two games of the National League Wild Card race. It marked their best July since they went 25-6 in 1913.

By snapping a seven-game losing streak at Citizens Bank Park, the Giants will have a chance at clinching their eighth consecutive series victory in Thursday’s series finale. They haven’t dropped back-to-back games since June 26-27.

“We had to say a lot of byes, but they kept their focus and went out there and won a ballgame at a place that it’s been a while since we won a game,” manager Bruce Bochy said.

The Giants scored all five of their runs in the sixth inning on homers from , and . It was their first three-homer inning since April 4, 2018, against the Mariners.

struck out five over six shutout innings, providing much-needed length after the Giants parted with relievers Sam Dyson, Mark Melancon and Drew Pomeranz in three separate trades earlier in the day. The quality start capped an impressive July for Samardzija, who went 4-1 with a 2.09 ERA in six outings this month.

“I think it’s been the most consistent I’ve been with the Giants,” Samardzija said. “We lost a few good guys today and that’s unfortunate, but that’s the way this game goes. You can’t make any excuses. You just have to go out there and do your job and win some ballgames.”

Even without Dyson, Melancon and Pomeranz, the Giants’ bullpen remained stout, showcasing the depth that gave Zaidi the confidence to deal from a surplus of relievers.

The Phillies scored their lone run of the game off left-hander Tony Watson after Bryce Harper walked, advanced to third on a double by J.T. Realmuto and scored on a groundout by Adam Haseley in the seventh, but Reyes Moronta and closer Will Smith combined to pitch two scoreless innings to end the game. Moronta will likely step in to replace Dyson as Smith’s setup man, though Bochy said the roles will be ironed out in the coming days.

“When you lose two of your late-inning guys and another one that was throwing well, you’ve got to make some adjustments, and that’s what we’ll talk about,” Bochy said. “We’ll get this figured out.”

Dickerson scratched

The Giants scratched outfielder from their lineup Wednesday and replaced him with Austin Slater. Bochy said Dickerson “felt it a little bit in his side” and will undergo an MRI. Dickerson has been a key catalyst since joining the Giants on June 21, batting .386 with a 1.222 OPS and six home runs in 30 games.
