The top tier of San Francisco’s farm system is littered with star teenagers in the infield. But why can’t a few pitchers steal the spotlight?
Giants left-handed pitching prospects Carson Whisenhunt (San Francisco’s No. 11 prospect) and Luis De La Torre (San Francisco’s No. 15 prospect) each went six frames with double-digit strikeouts Saturday in their respective games in Triple-A Sacramento and High-A Eugene.

Whisenhunt, a 25-year-old out of East Carolina, lowered his ERA to 3.66 and helped the first-place River Cats to a 7-4 win over the Tacoma Rainiers, the Seattle Mariners’ Triple-A affiliate.
The 2022 second-round pick leads all Giants prospects and Triple-A pitchers in strikeouts with 72. He recently earned Triple-A Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Month Honors, and could soon be a fixture of San Francisco’s big league staff that ranks 22nd in baseball in ERA (4.52).
The 22-year-old De La Torre allowed zero earned runs as the Emeralds defeated the Everett Aquasox, the Seattle Mariners’ High-A affiliate, 2-1. De La Torre is down to a 3.64 ERA on the season and is at 12.2 strikeouts per nine innings (K/9).
De La Torre was signed in July 2023 as a free agent to a Minor League contract. He now has 21 strikeouts over his last two starts.
