Giants add reliever Barrett from D-backs

February 5th, 2019

The Giants announced Tuesday that they've acquired right-handed reliever from the D-backs for cash considerations. Outfielder , whom the Giants claimed off waivers from the Rangers last week, was designated for assignment to clear a spot for Barrett on the 40-man roster.
Barrett, 27, posted a 3.49 ERA over 59 1/3 innings for Arizona in 2016, though he's struggled to replicate that success in the Majors, recording a 5.00 ERA in '17 and a 5.14 ERA in '18. He spent the bulk of the 2018 season at Triple-A Reno, where he logged a 2.87 ERA over 53 1/3 innings and saved eight games.
The D-backs designated Barrett for assignment to clear a roster spot for newly signed reliever last week.
When a player's contract is designated for assignment -- often abbreviated "DFA" -- that player is immediately removed from his club's 40-man roster, and 25-man roster if he was on that as well. Within seven days of the transaction (it was previously 10 days), the player must either be traded, released or placed on irrevocable outright waivers.
A third-round Draft pick of the D-backs in 2012, Barrett essentially replaces right-handed reliever , who was cut by the Giants following their acquisition of Andreoli. Barrett joins a deep Giants bullpen that also includes fellow right-handers , , and .
