Rodríguez, González are May's top rookies

June 3rd, 2022

Mariners outfielder Julio Rodríguez and Giants outfielder Luis González have been named the Rookies of the Month for May.

The path each player took to get to this point couldn’t have been more different, with Rodríguez debuting on Opening Day as the No. 3 prospect in all of baseball and González joining the Giants in late April after being claimed off waivers from the White Sox last summer. But both now share the stage as May’s Rookie of the Month Award winners.

Rodríguez, 21, struggled in his first month, posting a .544 OPS, but he hit .309 with six homers, five steals, 17 RBIs and an .866 OPS in May. He’s the first Mariner to win AL Rookie of the Month honors since Mike Carp in August 2011.

González, who re-signed with the Giants on a Minor League deal last December after being released prior to the non-tender Deadline, wasn’t part of San Francisco’s Opening Day roster in 2022, but all he’s done is hit since he received a callup on April 22.

The 26-year-old posted a .368 average, one homer, seven doubles, 13 RBIs and a .910 OPS at the plate in May and also made three pitching appearances, two of them scoreless. He's the Giants’ first NL Rookie of the Month Award winner since Buster Posey in 2010.
