NEW YORK – Giants manager Tony Vitello was ejected from Saturday’s 9-5 victory against the Mets at Citi Field in the top of the second inning after coming out of the dugout to argue a foul ball challenge that he expected to be overturned.
Giants left fielder Turner Hill led off the frame and appeared to be hit by a pitch thrown by left-hander Zac Thornton. But home-plate umpire Jeremie Rehak said the pitch hit Hill’s bat to make it a foul ball.
After a review requested by the Giants, the call stood, but Vitello still wondered why it took so long to make a final decision. He then came out of the dugout and, seconds later, Rehak ejected Vitello from the game.
“I walked out without any fire in me to explain what was coming out of our dugout. I wanted to calm the situation, and I got thrown out for walking out of the dugout,” Vitello said.
