Giants name Pete Putila General Manager

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The San Francisco Giants have hired Houston Astros Assistant GM Pete Putila as the club’s new General Manager, President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi announced tonight. Putila becomes the 10th GM in Giants history since the Giants moved to San Francisco in 1958 joining Chub Feeney (1947-1969), Horace Stoneham (1970-1975), Spec Richardson (1976-1981), Tom Haller (1981-1985), Al Rosen (1986-1992), Bob Quinn (1993-1996), Brian Sabean (1996-2015), Bobby Evans (2015-2018) and Scott Harris (2019-2022).

Putila (pronounced puh-TELL-uh), 33, was in his 12th season in the Astros organization and his third as the Assistant General Manager. In his role he was involved in all aspects of Baseball Operations with a focus on Player Development, Player Evaluation and Sports Medicine & Performance. Houston has advanced to the postseason in each of Putila’s three seasons as Assistant GM, reaching the World Series last season and the American League Championship Series in 2020.

The Astros combined regular season record during his three years as an Assistant GM was 230-154 (.599), the second-best winning percentage of any team in the Majors since 2020 behind only the Dodgers (260-124, .677).

The Carmichaels, Pa. native joined the Astros in 2011 as a Baseball Operations Intern before being hired to a full-time role of Baseball Operations Assistant in September of 2011. From there he was promoted to Baseball Operations Coordinator in 2013 where he began working in conjunction with decision sciences to integrate data, research, and technology into the player development process across the Major and Minor League levels. Putila traveled with the Major League club in 2014 and 2015, conducting replay reviews.

In 2015 he was promoted to Assistant Director of Minor League Operations where he assisted in all aspects of Major and Minor League player development and Minor League operations. A year later in 2016, he was promoted to Director of Player Development where he oversaw Major and Minor League player development while assisting with the integration of scouting data and technology. 

Putila graduated from West Virginia University with a bachelor’s degree in Sport Management. During his time in Morgantown, he also served as the baseball team’s student manager
