Injuries & Moves: Stras, Harris, Ross off IL

November 20th, 2021

The Nationals' 2021 season concluded on Oct. 3, and while some players take time before beginning to gear up for next year, there are several who will be rehabbing this winter to get healthy for 2022. Track injury updates and roster moves here during the offseason.

Nov. 19: Contracts of two prospects selected
Outfielder Donovan Casey and left-hander Evan Lee -- ranked by MLB Pipeline as the Nationals’ No. 18 and No. 21 prospects, respectively -- were protected from the Rule 5 Draft and added to the 40-man roster. After being acquired from the Dodgers in July, Casey was named Washington’s Minor League Defensive Player of the Year. Lee was 4-3 with a 4.32 ERA in 21 games (20 starts) in High-A Wilmington this season.

Nov. 7: Three players activated from 60-day IL
Right-handers (thoracic outlet syndrome), (thoracic outlet syndrome) and (partial UCL tear in right elbow) were reinstated to the 40-man roster. All three pitchers are expected to be ready for Spring Training.

Nov. 5: LHP Francisco Pérez claimed off waivers from Cleveland
The Nationals added to their pitching staff with Pérez, who was 4-0 with a 1.87 ERA and a trio of saves between Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus in 2021. The 24-year-old transitioned to a relief role from the rotation last season.

Nov. 5: RHP Kyle McGowin outrighted to Triple-A Rochester
McGowin’s 2021 season was cut short early by a UCL sprain in his right elbow. In 27 relief appearances last year, he posted a 4.20 ERA.

Oct. 13: LHP Sean Nolin outrighted to Triple-A Rochester, elected free agency
Nolin, 31, returned to the Major Leagues in August for the first time since 2015. He split his 10 games as a starter (0-2, 5.60 ERA, 17 2/3 innings) and reliever (0-0, 2.00 ERA, nine innings). Nolin had the right to elect free agency because of a previous outright assignment, and he chose to do so.

Oct. 13: LHP Alberto Baldonado outrighted to Triple-A Rochester
The southpaw made his Major League debut with the Nationals on Sept. 2, and he went on to pitch 10 2/3 innings out of the bullpen. Baldonado, 28, was 0-1 with an 8.44 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 14 games.

Oct. 13: RHP Steven Fuentes outrighted to Triple-A Rochester
Fuentes, 24, battled injuries during this season, including being placed on the 60-day IL in July with a right shoulder strain. He went 0-5 with a 19.96 ERA in 15 1/3 innings across five starts (seven games) at the Triple-A level.
