Cardinals' top 2026 int'l signee off to red-hot start in Dominican Summer League

Back on Jan. 15, the Cardinals landed Emanuel Luna as the 2026 international signing period opened. The outfielder turned 17 years old that day, and as the No. 8 prospect in his class, he became the organization’s highest-ranked signee since MLB Pipeline began its list in 2012.

Handed a $2.3 million signing bonus that ranks among the highest for an international player in franchise history, Luna has hit the ground running in the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League. The right-handed hitter popped a pair of home runs during the DSL Cardinals’ 11-5 win over the DSL Nationals on Saturday afternoon at the club’s complex.

Through his first three pro games, Luna has gone deep three times and racked up seven RBIs. He’s also walked as many times (three) as he’s struck out, leading to a gaudy .556/.692/1.667 slash line. His trio of roundtrippers is tied for most on the freshly begun circuit despite having fewer than half the at-bats of the other batters.

The scouting report on Luna coming out of his hometown of Santo Domingo, D.R., was that he could consistently spray the ball to all fields. That’s been on display right out of the chute, as two of his homers have gone to the opposite field and the other to center. Both of his other two knocks -- a single and double -- have gone to right and center as well.

Before so much as striding into the batter’s box as a professional, Luna vaulted up to No. 18 on the Cardinals’ Top 30 Prospects list. He joins an impressive crop of international talent flourishing throughout the system, led by catcher Rainiel Rodriguez (STL No. 2/MLB No. 23), who was recently promoted to Double-A, becoming one of the youngest hitters on the circuit at just 19 years old.

Even at just 17, Luna has the look of a future 20-homer/20-steal contributor. He’s physically put together at 6-foot-2 and 204 pounds and has all of the raw tools that evaluators look for in prospects at this stage in their careers. As the Cardinals have embraced a youth movement at the big league level that has vaulted them into playoff contention, they continue to find success in multiple facets throughout their system.
