ST. LOUIS -- Dexter Fowler is dealing with soreness and bruising on his left foot after fouling a ball off it Friday night, but the Cardinals don’t expect him to miss any significant time.

The initial X-ray after the game didn’t show anything that signified a fracture, but the Cardinals had a second CT scan done Friday night because the ball hit the same area Fowler fractured last year. That fracture was suffered in August and sidelined him for the rest of the season.

“[The scan was] negative, which is positive,” Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said. “Got the word later last night, and clearly we were all relieved. Just going to have some soreness in there. [He] hasn’t been able to move around a whole lot yet today to determine his availability.”

Fowler was out of the lineup Saturday against the Astros, but Shildt said he might be able to come off the bench.

“Day to day, just didn’t feel like giving him a push today,” Shildt said. “He’s probably going to be somewhat limited, but hopefully available.”

Fowler was able to walk gingerly to first base when he walked in the eighth inning of the Cardinals' 5-3 win over the Astros, and he made it to third on Jose Martínez’s double. Harrison Bader pinch-ran for Martínez that inning but stayed in the game, taking over in center field for Fowler.

Gyorko to head to Minors next week

Jedd Gyorko (left calf strain) will start a rehab assignment on Tuesday in Triple-A Memphis.

Gyorko has been on the injured list since June 8, starting with a lower back strain that led to a calf strain the day before he was to be activated. While he was down with the calf injury, he had minor arthroscopic surgery on his right wrist to fix recurring problems.

Shildt said the Cardinals are hoping the infielder can play approximately eight games in his rehab with some days off blended in.

“We feel like seven to eight games is pretty much a small baseline for what we need to have for him to get back,” Shildt said. “Not necessarily worried about Jedd from a timing standpoint because Jedd has this wonderful ability to get his timing in a relatively quick fashion. That’s why we’ve been able to get him back earlier when he’s had these issues. But it’s more about just physically making sure he can continue to recover and handle the day-to-day demands of playing.”

Molina still experiencing thumb pain

Yadier Molina (right thumb tendon strain) said he is still dealing with some discomfort in his thumb, and he isn’t sure what or when his next step will be.

Molina and Marcell Ozuna (fractured fingers) have been playing catch, and Ozuna said Friday that he feels good swinging the bat. But Molina hasn’t swung the bat and is still strengthening his hand. There isn’t pain in his thumb when he throws, only when something comes in contact with the thumb.

“Alright,” Molina said Saturday about how he feels. “Just alright. Right now, we’re still doing treatment and trying to get the strength back.”

Shildt said both Ozuna and Molina will see a specialist again on Monday to determine a timetable. He acknowledged that Ozuna is “slightly” further ahead in recovery than Molina.

For now, Molina is getting treatment and trying to be patient, which doesn’t come easy for the veteran catcher.

“It’s difficult, but at the same time you have to understand the situation and get better, try to get healthy and be patient,” Molina said. “For me, it’s hard to be patient. But at the same time, you have to be smart.”

Shreve clears waivers

Left-handed reliever Chasen Shreve has cleared waivers and accepted an assignment to Triple-A, the Cardinals announced Saturday.

Shreve, 29, was designated for assignment Tuesday to make room on the 40-man roster for right-hander Mike Mayers. It was the second time the Cardinals DFA’d Shreve this year, the first coming right before the season started.

In his six-year career, Shreve has a 3.71 ERA in 218 games. He and Giovanny Gallegos were part of the trade that sent Luke Voit to the Yankees last year. But in 2019, Shreve has a 9.00 ERA in three appearances (two innings). He earned the win Monday -- a day before he was DFA’d -- when he allowed two runs in one-third of an inning in the Cardinals’ extra-innings victory over the Pirates.
