ST. LOUIS -- Eric Thames got just enough of an Adam Wainwright sinker, drilling the pitch for his fifth homer of the season in the Brewers' 3-2 win over the Cardinals at Busch Stadium on Wednesday.
It just eluded the outstretched glove of right fielder Harrison Bader to give the Brewers a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning at Busch Stadium. The ball actually hit the top of Bader's glove before going over the wall.
"I was running back to the dugout," Thames said. "I thought he caught it, just seeing him time it, but it hit off of his glove and went over."
Bader called the missed catch a tough pill to swallow.
"It was a one-run game that we lost, and there is your one run," Bader said. "So you move on, you learn from it, and you do better next time."
According to Statcast™, the long ball had a 43-degree launch angle, the highest on an over-the-wall home run in the Majors so far this season.

"I didn't think it was a homer off the bat," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. "Obviously he got it, and it was incredibly high. The wind was helping it a little, so I thought it would be close. Then you saw Bader get himself up against the wall, so I thought he had a real shot. He kind of was there for so long almost to where it was hard to time [his] jump."
Wainwright said he executed the pitch he was trying to make.
"I thought I'd beat him just enough to where it would be to the warning track," Wainwright said. "The ball got up, and he's a big strong fella, so it carried farther. I thought Harry caught it at first, so I got real excited, then kind of had a lull there."
It was Thames' second homer of the series.
Hernan Perez gave the Brewers a 1-0 lead with his first homer of the season in the second. Perez's homer was estimated at 441 feet, and had the hardest exit velocity of his career (107.5 mph), per Statcast™.
