Gyorko goes on DL with left groin strain

Wacha plans visit with medical staff; Spring Training schedule released

August 29th, 2018

ST. LOUIS -- The left groin strain that forced out of Tuesday's game has landed him on the 10-day disabled list.
Losing their third starting position player to injury over the course of a week, the Cardinals made the move official prior to Wednesday's game against the Pirates. However, there is concern that Gyorko's ailment may linger longer than those that have and also currently sidelined.
"I talked with Jedd this morning, and he clearly was in discomfort," manager Mike Shildt said. "It's going to be a little bit of time."
A better estimate of how much time it will take for Gyorko to heal should be known after the Cardinals read the results of an MRI that Gyorko was scheduled to undergo late Wednesday afternoon. Gyorko felt his left groin muscle tighten coming out of the batter's box in the eighth inning of Tuesday's series opener. He described the discomfort as "a little worse than what I've usually had" with similar previous injuries.

In the meantime, the Cardinals will mix and match across the infield to cover the absences of Wong and Gyorko. and can play either position. The Cardinals also have and Matt Carpenter available to play third, if the club wants to slot Matt Adams or in at first base.
Outfielder rejoined the Cardinals from Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday to take Gyorko's spot on the active roster.
Wacha in a holding pattern
General manger Michael Girsch confirmed that the fatigue/soreness that forced out of his Double-A rehab start on Tuesday after 52 pitches appears to be related to Wacha's previous left oblique injury. That initial injury has had Wacha sidelined since June 20.
Wacha, who returned to St. Louis from Springfield, Mo., plans to visit with the Cardinals' medical staff to get a deeper read on the issue. The Cardinals will wait until after that evaluation before determining what's next for Wacha in his rehab progression. He had hoped to be ready to rejoin the rotation next week. This likely changes that projection.
In three rehab appearances, Wacha has allowed eight runs (six earned) on eight hits while walking three and striking out eight in 6 2/3 innings.
Mark your calendars
