CINCINNATI -- The Cardinals placed Tyler Lyons on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to Wednesday, with a left elbow sprain and recalled Mike Mayers from Triple-A Memphis. In 22 appearances this season, Lyons has a 5.93 ERA and has surrendered nine earned runs on 16 hits in 13 2/3 innings. He sustained the injury during warmups before Thursday's game against Miami.
"He was playing catch, everything seemed to go well, then something tightened up," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "They had it looked at, as it was concerning, ran further tests and then realized it was probably going to take some time, so the DL stint was inevitable at that point."
Matheny said Lyons does not have previous history with this injury, to his knowledge, and that nothing surgical is necessary. The move takes a left-handed arm out of the bullpen for St. Louis, with Austin Gomber and Brett Cecil being the remaining lefties.
"When you look at the lefties in their lineup, you'd like to have as many as you can get," Matheny said. "A couple of the other guys are going to have to get it done. We have righties who can get the lefties out, too."

Mayers began the season with St. Louis but was optioned to Memphis on April 16 and has since been recalled five times. He has made 12 appearances with the Cardinals this season and has given up four earned runs on 17 hits in 15 2/3 innings.
"I feel like I've gotten used to it, and the Cardinals have also done a good job keeping things similar between Triple-A and here as far as the workouts," Mayers said. "It's just part of it. You get to go to the big leagues, so it can't be that bad, right?"
His last appearance came on June 1, when he had a scoreless outing against the Pirates. Mayers has made five appearances for Triple-A Memphis and has yet to give up a run there in 7 2/3 innings.
The Cardinals currently have seven pitchers on the disabled list.
