D-backs sign Saltalamacchia to Minors deal

PHOENIX -- The D-backs agreed to terms with Jarrod Saltalamacchia on a Minor League deal Thursday, according to a baseball source.

Saltalamacchia, 30, was released by the Marlins on Tuesday after opening the season 2-for-29 with 12 strikeouts, one double and one home run.

Miami must pay Saltalamacchia the $14.2 million remaining on his contract, minus the prorated Major League minimum that the D-backs will be responsible for.

The D-backs have been looking to add catching since Rule 5 Draft pick Oscar Hernandez went down this spring with a hand injury and veteran Gerald Laird was sidelined by back surgery.

Tuffy Gosewisch and Jordan Pacheco have handled the bulk of the catching duties for Arizona.
