In the middle of an up-and-down journey back from both left Achilles bursitis and a right wrist contusion, Jorge Polanco seemed to make more progress on Sunday.
The Mets’ rehabbing first baseman homered for Triple-A Syracuse in a 7-3 loss to Worcester. It was his second homer in his last three games.
The switch-hitting Polanco, batting lefty, drove a 1-1 sweeper to right field for a two-run shot in the eighth inning. The ball carried a projected 360 feet with a 98.9 mph exit velocity. He finished the day 1-for-4.
The long ball served as a birthday celebration for Polanco, who turned 33 on Sunday. He has now played in five games in his second rehab assignment, collecting two hits -- both home runs -- alongside two walks. Polanco played on back-to-back days for the first time on Thursday and Friday, but he has yet to play the field since restarting his rehab.
The 13-year MLB veteran signed a two-year, $40 million deal with the Mets this offseason as part of the plan to replace the departed Pete Alonso. However, Polanco has played just 14 games in the big leagues this year.
