Kendrick a worthy ASG write-in candidate

WASHINGTON -- The Nationals have spent the early part of the season -- as well as the past three seasons -- openly campaigning for third baseman Anthony Rendon to make it to a National League All-Star team for the first time in his career. But now they have found a new player’s All-Star case to start championing.

“I’ve said it this whole week,” manager Dave Martinez said. “To me, Howie [Kendrick], he’s an All-Star.”

Kendrick is not one of the Nationals players to appear on the ballot, the latest of which was revealed Monday, but his numbers make him a worthy write-in candidate.

Entering Monday’s game against the Phillies, Kendrick was hitting .333/.383/.602 with 12 home runs, his most since smashing 13 in 2013, and a 148 OPS+. Even while the Nats have had their share of injuries, Kendrick, who will be 36 next month and is coming off a torn right Achilles tendon he sustained last May, has played in 59 games, bouncing around at first, second and third base for Washington.

"I don't even know, he's unbelievable," right fielder Adam Eaton said. "I'm telling you, every time he hits the ball, I'm like, 'What is this guy doing? How old is he? 36?' ... I look at the 36-year-olds that I know personally, they're sitting on the couch having a beer. And this guy has no business doing what he's doing, sliding, diving headfirst and driving in runs. It's unbelievable.

"I can't say enough about him, send the guy to the All-Star Game."

Where Kendrick, who made the American League All-Star team in 2011 with the Angels, would slot into the All-Star voting is unclear, but his offensive numbers give him a case to join the Nats' contingent in Cleveland next month.

“Not only is he a good player, but an unbelievable leader in that clubhouse,” Martinez said. “Right now he's one of my saviors.”

Of the Nationals' players who do appear on the ballot, Rendon ranks highest, but he is still coming in at fifth place among NL third basemen, despite one of the best seasons of his career. Rendon began Monday hitting .321/.415/.660 with 16 home runs and the third-highest Wins Above Replacement mark (3.2, per FanGraphs) among NL position players, despite missing about two weeks with a bruised left elbow earlier in the season.

The other notable Nats on the ballot ranked as follows: Brian Dozier came in at ninth among NL second baseman, Yan Gomes ranked 10th among catchers, Trea Turner placed ninth in the shortstop race and Juan Soto came in 13th among outfielders.

Fans may vote in "The Primary" at MLB.com and all 30 club sites, the MLB At Bat and MLB Ballpark apps up to five times in any 24-hour period. Fans in the U.S. and Canada can also vote on Google Search for every position, or up to 17 unique players per day, by searching "MLB Vote" or the names of their favorite players. Primary voting ends at 4 p.m. ET on Friday.

The top three vote-getters at each position (including nine outfielders) per league will move on to "The Starters Election," which begins at noon ET on Wednesday, June 26. The votes will reset for a 28-hour voting window that ends at 4 p.m. ET on Thursday, June 27. Starters for the 2019 Midsummer Classic will be unveiled on ESPN that night at 7 ET.
