Werth gets cortisone shot for shoulder sprain

NEW YORK -- Nationals right fielder Jayson Werth had an MRI taken Tuesday night on his right shoulder and the results revealed an AC joint sprain. On Wednesday, he received a cortisone shot in the shoulder and will not be able to play for the next couple of days.

Werth hurt the shoulder making a catch against the Phillies last week at Nationals Park. He had the day off Saturday and was back in the lineup Sunday against the Braves. The Nationals had the day off Monday, but Werth was not in the lineup the next day.

"He should be good to go [in a couple of days]. It's one of those things where it's kind of a painful thing," manager Matt Williams said. "There is no structural damage, no issues or anything else in the pictures. The cortisone shot will calm it down to get the inflammation out of there as quickly as possible. But during the process, he can't play. He has to shut it down for a couple of days at least."

Werth has been productive for the Nationals this season, hitting .279 with 12 home runs and 63 RBIs.

With Werth out, Kevin Frandsen received the start in left field, while Bryce Harper moved over from left to right field.
