Rutschman off IL, returns for Kansas City series

The Orioles have reinstated catcher from the 10-day injured list ahead of Tuesday’s game at the Royals, the club announced. In a corresponding move, Baltimore designated catcher Sam Huff for assignment.

Rutschman went on the IL on April 11 with left ankle inflammation, having felt something when he pulled into second base on a double during a loss to the Giants. The 28-year-old was hitting .294/.385/.471 with six doubles in 10 games before going on the shelf.

"He did a great job of keeping his body going," manager Craig Albernaz said of Rutschman, who was back behind the plate and batted third on Tuesday at Kauffman Stadium. "He checked every box."

Rutschman joined the O’s during their series at Cleveland this past weekend. He went through a full workout Friday and came out of it cleanly.

“A lot better,” Rutschman said then of the status of his ankle. “I think everyone’s happy with the response time of how everything’s reacted to the treatment and whatnot.”

Huff, 28, played just three games while on the roster, in his first season with the Baltimore organization. He went 2-for-9 with a double and an RBI. Talented rookie Samuel Basallo handled most of the catching duties in Rutschman’s stead.
