Boone: Judge, Stanton 'very close' to return

September 11th, 2020

NEW YORK -- The Yankees could have and back in their lineup within a week, manager Aaron Boone said on Friday.

The slugging duo is said to be progressing well in their respective rehab programs and could travel to the club’s alternate site in Moosic, Pa., this weekend.

“I would say they're very close,” Boone said. “They're both feeling well, they're both doing well. Hopefully we're in the final days before they start getting some at-bats and playing with us.”

Judge sustained a right calf strain on Aug. 11 and returned from the injury on Aug. 26, only to re-injure the calf while running the bases during that game. At the time, general manager Brian Cashman said that Judge’s stint on the IL would take twice the time of the original strain because the rehab had failed.

Stanton has not played since Aug. 8, when he sustained a left hamstring strain. Boone has said that Stanton is slightly ahead of Judge in the rehab protocol. In recent days, Stanton has been running bases, hitting on the field and throwing.

“I would say they're pretty healthy, but there's a building up in the progressions of running bases, the agility stuff and that endurance,” Boone said. “We’re making sure that when they're entering a game, we feel like it's safe. You’ve got to pass some protocols and some build-ups to get back to a point to where you're in a Major League game and the rigors that goes with that.”

Boone is less certain about the Yankees’ timetable for left-hander . On the injured list with a left flexor strain, Paxton reported soreness after playing catch earlier this week and has been shut down from throwing. Boone said that it would be “challenging” for Paxton to make it back before the end of the regular season. It is possible that Paxton could return as an option out of the bullpen.

“He’s just dealing with some soreness,” Boone said. “We’re going day by day with him right now.”

On Aug. 12, the Yankees’ first day without both Judge and Stanton, the team entered the day with an 11-6 record, 1 1/2 games ahead of the Rays in the American League East. Since then, the club has lost 15 of 27 games entering play on Friday.
