Urshela, Voit are Munson Awards winners

December 17th, 2020

Gio Urshela and Luke Voit will be among the honorees for the 41st annual Thurman Munson Awards, to be held virtually on Feb. 2. The ceremony recognizes success and inspiration on the fields of play and community spirit off the field.

Also selected to receive Munson Awards are the Mets' Michael Conforto, Hall of Fame catcher Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez, Hall of Fame linebacker Harry Carson and Team USA soccer standout Alyssa Naeher.

Voit, Urshela, Conforto, Rodriguez and Naeher will all be recipients of the Thurman Munson Award, while Carson will receive the Munson "Captain" Award.

The Awards pay homage to the late Yankees captain, whose life was tragically cut short by a plane crash on Aug. 2, 1979. Diana Munson, Thurman's widow, will participate in her 41st consecutive benefit.

Since its inception, the program has raised more than $17 million to benefit the AHRC NYC Foundation. The not-for-profit organization supports programs enabling children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

AHRC NYC is one of the largest organizations of its kind, serving 15,000 children and adults who have intellectual and developmental disabilities, including autism, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injuries and other disabilities.

Voit led the Majors with 22 home runs during the pandemic-shortened regular season, bolstering the heart of the Yankees' lineup with 52 RBIs while stepping into a leadership role in the clubhouse. Since being acquired in a July 2018 trade, the boisterous first baseman has compiled a .279/.372/.543 slash line (143 OPS+) with 57 home runs and 147 RBIs in 213 games.

Urshela has been a key contributor in the Yankees' lineup since being promoted early last season, tightening his grip on the starting third-base job with stellar defense and consistent offense. Urshela has batted .310/.358/.523 (133 OPS+) over 175 games as a Yankee, with 27 home runs and 104 RBIs. During the 2020 postseason, Urshela became the first Yankees third baseman to hit a postseason grand slam. He was a finalist for the American League Gold Glove Award.
