Rising star Torres shattering Yanks records

April 22nd, 2019

As part of Young Stars Week, MLB is celebrating one of the game’s most dynamic emerging talents each day from April 22-26. Leading off the festivities is 22-year-old Yankees infielder Gleyber Torres.

hasn’t even played 162 Major League games yet, and he’s already bloomed into one of the brightest young stars in the game. The Cubs signed him as an amateur free agent out of Venezuela in 2013. In July 2016, they traded him to the Yankees in a deal for . By the start of the '17 season, he was ranked as the No. 3 prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline.

Torres debuted on April 22, 2018, for the Yankees and since then, when we hear the phrase “Gleyber Torres is the youngest Yankee since ...” in relation to a feat, the name that follows is usually a great -- from to to . And if Torres isn’t the youngest since one of those Bronx legends, it’s often because he’s set a franchise record on his own.

For example, Torres knocked a walk-off home run off on May 6 last season for his second career home run. At 21 years, 144 days old, Torres became the youngest player in franchise history with a walk-off home run, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The previous youngest? That would be Hall of Famer Mantle, who was 41 days older at the time of his first walk-off big fly.

Torres finished the season with two walk-off RBIs, making him the youngest player in Yankees history with multiple walk-off RBIs in a season.

In all, Torres hit 24 home runs in 2018, the second-highest total by any Yankees player in a season before turning 22. The only Yankees youngster with more? 21-year-old DiMaggio, with 29 in 1936.

"It's impressive," said after Torres' two-homer game on April 4. "He can use the whole field and uses it with power, especially for a guy who plays second and shortstop. He can hit homers to left field and spray doubles on the right-field line. It's impressive what he can do at such a young age."

Torres had two multi-home run games in 2018, becoming the second Yankees player with multiple multi-homer games before turning 22, joining DiMaggio, who had three.

Not only did Torres hit multiple home runs in games, he had a streak of homers -- going deep in four straight games in late May. He was the first player age 21 or younger to homer in four straight since his teammate in 2011. The only other players that young with a four-game home run streak in the live ball era (since 1920) were ('04), ('01), ('98), ('77) and ('59). Torres is the youngest American League player with home runs in four straight games.

Torres’ successes in 2018 were recognized in the form of a number of honors, including an AL All-Star team nod. He was also honored as the AL Player of the Week twice, in May and September, and he was the AL Rookie of the Month in May.

Torres has gotten off to a good start in 2019, and his bat is more important than ever given the injuries to various Yankees hitters. He’s also gotten chances to play shortstop with and on the injured list. Torres was primarily a shortstop in the Minors before being traded to the Yankees, who were set at the position at the Major League level with Gregorius. Look for Torres to continue to shine brightly in the Bronx infield for years to come.

"A talented player. He can do it all," Yankees left-hander said. "He hits really well and plays great defense. Overall, he's a really good player. And now that I know him, a great guy."
