Vargas rising to historic heights as season-opening hit streak reaches 22 games

April 30th, 2026

MILWAUKEE -- Another day, another hit for .

The Diamondbacks infielder has opened the season by hitting in 22 straight games, and 25 dating back to last year, singling in the second inning of Arizona’s 6-2 win over the Brewers on Wednesday at American Family Field. Vargas finished 2-for-5 with a run scored, raising his batting average to .372.

The 22 straight is tied for the third longest streak to open a season since 1940. Joe Torre, then with the Cardinals, also hit in 22 straight to open the 1971 season while Edgar Renteria (Braves) hit safely in the first 23 games of 2006. Ron LeFlore (Tigers) is the leader thanks to his 30-game streak to open the 1976 season.

The 25-game streak dating back to last season is the longest active streak in MLB and it's the longest since Bryan Reynolds hit in 25 straight for the Pirates last season.

Among Diamondbacks single-season hit streaks, the 22 games ranks third behind Luis Gonzalez (30 in 1999) and Tony Womack (24 in 2000).

Including hit streaks that span multiple seasons, Vargas’ 25-game streak ranks third behind Gonzalez and Paul Goldschmidt, who hit in 26 straight from the end of the 2013 season into the first week of the 2014 season.
