Chisholm's eventful stretch continues with ejection after called third strike

BOSTON – The evening began with logging his first assignment in the leadoff spot as a member of the Yankees. He’d be gone before the game ended.

Chisholm was ejected by first-base umpire Todd Tichenor after being rung up on a called third strike to end the sixth inning, keeping Sonny Gray’s no-hit bid intact in the Yankees' 5-4, 10-inning loss to the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

Chisholm was upset that home-plate umpire Adam Hamari did not ask for help judging a checked swing, as Chisholm was ruled to have offered at Gray’s inning-ending curveball.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone emerged from the third-base dugout in an attempt to intercept Chisholm, but as Boone spoke to Hamari, Chisholm removed his batting helmet and spiked it to the dirt.

That prompted Tichenor to eject Chisholm, who has had an eventful recent stretch that included taking the field with a lollipop in his mouth, drawing criticism from Boone. Chisholm also exited a game after hitting himself in the groin with a foul ball, revealing that he has never worn a protective cup as a professional.

Anthony Volpe entered the game to replace Chisholm, taking over at shortstop as José Caballero moved to second base.
