NEW YORK – Luis Gil's return to the rotation is tentatively lined up to coincide with the Yankees’ first game back at Tropicana Field, as manager Aaron Boone, before New York's game against the Marlins on Saturday night, on unveiled the club’s rotation plans for the coming week.
Gil is scheduled to make a Minor League start for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre at Rochester on Sunday. Boone said the right-hander would then slot in on regular rest, which would be Friday against the Rays in St. Petersburg, Fla.
The Yankees took advantage of early off-days to open the season with a four-man rotation, allowing them to start only Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, Will Warren and Ryan Weathers.
That left Gil – who pitched to a 4.66 ERA in 19 1/3 spring innings – on the outside looking in, at least temporarily. Boone said Gil will follow Weathers in the rotation.
Though he was limited to 11 starts last season due to injury, Gil has said he’s setting his sights upon eclipsing his statistics from 2024, when he was the American League’s Rookie of the Year after posting a 15-7 record and 3.50 ERA in 29 starts.
The Yankees have not played at Tropicana Field since July 9-11, 2024. The Trop was damaged by Hurricane Milton in October 2024, forcing the Rays to play their 2025 home games at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Fla.
