NEW YORK – The next innings played at Yankee Stadium will occur in the postseason.
In coordination with Major League Baseball, the Yankees announced that Sunday’s game against the Orioles would not be played due to the forecast of sustained inclement weather. The game will not be rescheduled.
The contest had been scheduled to be the 162nd of the season for the Yankees, who will carry a 93-68 record into the American League Wild Card Series against the Red Sox, which begins on Tuesday. Baltimore finished the year 79-82.
Announced after a delay of nearly three hours, the cancellation cost the Yankees a chance to finish with 94 wins for a third consecutive season. It’s their first time playing fewer than 162 games (excluding the pandemic-shortened 2020 season) since 2002, when they also played 161 games.
They’re happy to have the extended break, however, considering what is coming next.
“It’s Yankee Stadium, it’s the Bronx, it’s Red Sox-Yankees,” manager Aaron Boone said. “You know that’s going to come with adrenaline, excitement, nerves – all those things. You’ve got to be able to handle it, and we have a number of guys in there with a ton of that kind of experience.”
Having announced that right-hander Cam Schlittler will be their Game 1 starter against Boston, Boone said the club would hold a workout in the Bronx on Monday afternoon, beginning around 3 p.m. ET.
That would confirm their choices for the remainder of the 26-man roster, Boone said.
“We’ll want to get some final answers there,” Boone said.
Fans with paid tickets for the Sept. 27 game may exchange them for tickets to a similar regular season game at Yankee Stadium (subject to availability) as described in the Yankees’ rain check policy, which may be found at www.yankees.com/raincheck.
Tickets can be exchanged online only and cannot be exchanged in person at the Yankee Stadium ticket office.
