Yanks boost Minor League pitching depth with deal for Astros' Sanchez

April 19th, 2026

NEW YORK – The Yankees added to their Minor League pitching depth on Sunday, acquiring right-handed reliever Wilmy Sanchez from the Astros in exchange for infielder .

Sanchez, 22, was tied for second among Houston farmhands in saves (seven) and tied for third in appearances (46) in 2025. This year, he had a 1.29 ERA in five outings for Double-A Corpus Christi.

Signed out of the Dominican Republic as a non-drafted free agent in May 2022, Sanchez has compiled an 8-6 record with 10 saves and a 3.80 ERA across 105 Minor League games (six starts). In 189 1/3 innings, he has permitted 162 hits and 97 runs (80 earned) with 124 walks and 248 strikeouts.

Shewmake, 28, was slashing .250/.314/.313 (8-for-32) in 10 games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season.

Shewmake was nearly promoted to the big league roster in June, when catcher J.C. Escarra went on the paternity list. At the time, manager Aaron Boone said Shewmake sustained an injury that kept him from being called up.

Shewmake came off the 40-man roster after clearing waivers in February. He has seen previous Major League time with the Braves (2023) and White Sox (‘24), collecting eight hits in 68 at-bats (.118).
