Unprecedented HR power, even for Yankees

September 23rd, 2020

A 60-game regular season presents new challenges in evaluating the Yankees’ big-swinging prowess -- for example, we knew on Opening Day that Roger Maris’ single-season franchise record of 61 homers was not likely to be challenged.

But make no mistake: this Bronx Bombers squad has lived up to its slugging pedigree. Paced by big league home run leader (21), the Yankees had blasted 91 homers entering play on Wednesday, their most through any season’s first 55 games.

“I think it’s the depth, the power throughout the lineup,” manager Aaron Boone said. “As we finish these final games of the season, the depth of our lineup will hopefully manifest itself. A lot of times for us, that shows up in the long ball.”

Prior to this season, the earliest that the Yankees had hit their 91st homer was in their 56th game, which occurred in 2002, ’18 and ’19.

“I pitched against the Yankees for a while in my career, and they’ve had some really good ones,” said left-hander . “Being able to watch these guys over the course of last year and this year, we have a lot of guys that when they make contact, they make hard contact. That’s a tribute to that.”

Boone said that he expects having Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton back as full-time contributors will help to continue the spread of power throughout the lineup.

“That bumps other really good power hitters down in the order,” Boone said. “If we can get going in the playoffs and get through the first round, I do feel like it … will benefit us and hopefully show off our strength, which is the depth of our offense.”

Carded T

Boone said that the Yankees received clarification on why Tyler Lyons’ name did not appear on the umpires’ lineup cards in Tuesday’s 12-1 victory over the Blue Jays, thus rendering the left-hander ineligible to pitch. Instead, Britton hurriedly prepared, working a perfect eighth inning.

Boone said the issue stemmed from a new system that requires all roster moves to be submitted electronically, rather than the traditional exchange of lineup cards at home plate.

“Ultimately, it’s on us -- on me -- to make sure we’re triple-checked and make sure everything that is potentially going through the system is buttoned up,” Boone said. “It’s a reminder of how diligent we have to be on that kind of stuff.”

Britton said that he was in a similar situation once before, rushing to warm up after his team’s pitcher was ejected. He didn’t mind the fire drill.

“I had spoken to Boonie before the game and told him I wanted to pitch last night anyway; I’d had some days off,” Britton said.

Bombers bits

Left-hander Jordan Montgomery is scheduled to make his final regular-season start on Thursday. Boone said that Montgomery’s role for the Wild Card Series has not yet been determined. Montgomery would be counted among the Yankees’ starters should they advance.
