Yanks miss on Keuchel, but confident in rotation

June 7th, 2019

TORONTO -- Dallas Keuchel will be able to keep his beard, at least for now.

Though the Yankees expressed interest in the free-agent left-hander, showing him a pro-rated version of the $17.9 million qualifying offer that Keuchel rejected from the Astros this past offseason, the hurler instead agreed to a one-year, $13 million contract with the Braves on Thursday evening, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.

The Yankees' proposed pact would have paid Keuchel approximately $11-12 million, according to MLB Network insider Jon Heyman. That offer had been on the table for more than a week, but was never improved upon, according to Heyman.

"I do think [our starting pitching] is good enough," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said after the Yankees’ 6-2 win over the Blue Jays. "I really didn't know that much was going on; I knew we were obviously having some conversations there, but that was just the extent of it. The season is a long one, there's lots of things that need to unfold, but we have the guys in that room absolutely to be elite."

New York had been among the clubs to scout the 2015 American League Cy Young Award winner at his showcase workouts in California, where the 31-year-old Keuchel was said to be in shape and could ramp up quickly to help at the big league level.

The Yankees' depth has taken hits this season, though they currently feature a full rotation of Masahiro Tanaka, James Paxton, Domingo German, J.A. Happ and CC Sabathia.

Ace Luis Severino has yet to pitch an inning this year, though he hopes to rejoin the roster after the All-Star break. Paxton and Sabathia have both had stints on the injured list, while nine-game winner German has had a couple of bumpy outings of late and is approaching a possible innings-limit situation.

"[The opinion] is the same thing as in Spring Training," Happ said. "When we're all out there, we like it. We've got everybody [who is here] right now, Sevy is on the mend and his rehab program, so if we can get him back, that's going to be huge. That's a dominant arm for us."

With Keuchel off the board, the Yankees could wait on reinforcements from the injured list like Severino, Jonathan Loaisiga (possibly due back in July) and Jordan Montgomery (possibly August) to bolster their depth, but general manager Brian Cashman is expected to be active on the trade market as well.

Some of the prominent names thought to be available prior to the July 31 Trade Deadline include the Giants' Madison Bumgarner, the Royals' Danny Duffy and a pair of Blue Jays hurlers in Aaron Sanchez and Marcus Stroman.

"We're five strong right now," Boone said. "Obviously, if we have some attrition along the way and we don't get some of our depth back with Loaisiga, we're going to have Sevy at some point, Monty could be back at some point. And if Loaisiga comes back and gets healthy, then you gain some depth.

"As the season unfolds, if we get in a situation where we continue to need, I know we're going to always kick the tires and explore how we're going to improve our club."
