St. Louis Gets Ready, Set to Race for Home This Weekend

12:19 PM EDT

With the big-league club on the road in Houston this Saturday, the Cardinals are prepping to host a different kind of competition back at home: the Cardinals Care annual 5K run/walk.

The course is a family-friendly affair that weaves through the streets of St. Louis, and participants will finish on Clark Street before taking a memorable victory lap around the warning track inside Busch Stadium.

The cause is equally memorable: the proceeds will go towards the Redbird Rookies Program – a Cardinals Care initiative that provides a baseball and softball league for kids in the area – and Joe Torre’s Safe at Home Foundation, a nonprofit focused on combatting domestic violence and abuse across the country.

The former NL MVP, Cardinals player and Hall of Fame manager will be present at the 5K this Saturday, teaming up with Jackie Joyner-Kersee to cheer on runners at the start/finish line. Torre has been outspoken about the domestic violence he and his family experienced growing up, as well as his passion for helping those who may be going through similar situations in their own homes.

This will be the seventh year the Cardinals have offered a 5K event.

"We're thrilled to invite fans downtown for a family-friendly event to help raise funds for two worthy causes," says Marybeth Johnson, manager of communications and charity events for Cardinals Care.

For those who can’t make it to St. Louis (or who may want to squeeze in a little extra training!), there's also a virtual 5K option, which still includes perks offered for in-person participation, including discounts at the team store and Cardinals Nation Restaurant (good through the end of June). Registration for the virtual 5k goes through May 30th, while registration for the in-person event is available up to even the morning of the race.

At stake for the top male and female finishers: throwing out an honorary pitch at a Cardinals game later this season. The top three finishers in each age category also get two tickets to a 2026 Cardinals game.

"So there are prizes involved," Johnson says.
