Umpire O'Nora exits D-backs-Cards tilt with illness

ST. LOUIS -- Home-plate umpire and crew chief Brian O'Nora left Tuesday's game between the D-backs and Cardinals due to illness prior to the start of the fourth inning.

The game, which the Cardinals went on to win 5-0, was delayed several minutes while second-base umpire Marvin Hudson exited to put on gear and move behind the plate The Cardinals were leading, 2-0, at the time on Matt Adams' first-inning homer off of Arizona starter Bronson Arroyo.

The remainder of the series opener was played with three umpires.

The change in umpires had no effect on Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright, who fired a one-hit shutout -- the first one-hitter of his career.

"It didn't seem like he struggled with it," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "I think typically most umpires are going to take a look at his curveball and you'll see that early in the game. A lot of times he'll fool an umpire just as badly as he'll fool a hitter. The umpire jumped in and you didn't see a lot of complaints from either side with the first umpire or the second."
