About SF Hip Hop
SF Hip Hop is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich culture of Hip-Hop in San Francisco and around the globe. Their mission is to highlight the historical and ongoing contributions of the Bay Area to the global hip-hop community through creative projects, events and collaborations.
About the Artist
Doug “Dug” Cunningham (b. 1971) began creating art at a young age in the early 1970s. In 1983, he became an early adopter of New York–style graffiti in the San Francisco Bay Area, establishing a strong presence on the streets before transitioning to commercial success in the 1990s.
During that decade, Cunningham worked with San Francisco–based Think Skateboards, where he met fellow artist Jason Noto. By the mid-1990s, the two formed Think Skateboards’ in-house design team, developing a collaborative approach that ultimately led to the founding of Morning Breath Inc. in Brooklyn, New York, in 2002.
Since then, their work has expanded well beyond skateboard graphics to include music packaging, apparel, advertising, poster design, and more. Over the past two decades, the duo have continued their commercial design practice while also exhibiting their personal artwork widely.
In 2017, HarperCollins released a monograph titled By the Skin of Our Teeth: The Art and Design of Morning Breath. In 2021, Cunningham and Noto received a Grammy Award for Best Music Packaging.
About the Artwork
The artwork on this jersey is paying homage to the Culture of Hip Hop. The “Wild Style” lettering on the front is inspired by the Graffiti lettering that has origins on NYC Subway Trains, but has spread the globe just as the other elements of hip hop have since the early 1970’s. The character on the back is a representation of the style and attitude that has defined hip-hop through the decades.
