About the Artwork:
The design features a beaded pattern that was heavily inspired by traditional basket designs from California tribes of the surrounding region. The pattern draws from the shapes, repetition, and movement found in these baskets, translating them into a modern design. Each bead was carefully placed and coordinated to have the same pattern throughout all the designs which took a lot of patience and time just like traditional beadwork. Basket designs have forever been a way to share stories, values, and connections to the land. Using a beaded style allowed Monica to honor the care and craftsmanship behind those traditions while reimagining them in a contemporary context. The design recognizes the history of the land the team calls home and brings together cultural influence, community, and sport. The final piece reflects tradition, respect, and connection to the past and present together.
